SOUTH BEND, Ind. - No. 10 Baylor soccer fell 2-0 to No. 3 Notre Dame in an exhibition match at Notre Dame's practice field on Saturday afternoon.
Both of ND's goals came in the second period off of set-piece plays after the Bears played a strong first half. For it being BU's only exhibition of the preseason and Notre Dame's second, Baylor Co-Head Coach Paul Jobson was pleased with how the team performed.
"We came out pretty strong," said Jobson. "In an exhibition you are trying different things and this is the time for that. They scored two set-piece goals, but none on the run, which is nice. We just needed to lock down on the dead ball situations a little better. But we know where our holes are and what we need to work on now, and we'll address those areas next week in practice."
Natalie Huggins led the Bears with three shots, including one on goal in the first period.
"It was a great match-up between two really good teams," Jobson said. "Notre Dame will be one of the teams everyone is really gunning for at the end of the year. Overall, I was pretty happy with our girls and their ability to get things going early on in the season. We are happy with where we are at but need to do some more work."
The Bears begin the regular season Aug. 23 at home against UTSA. Coming off the best season in program history, BU is ranked 10th by Top Drawer Soccer, 13th by the NSCAA and 14th by BennettRank in the preseason top 25 polls. Adding seven newcomers, Baylor returns 22 players from the 2012 Big 12 Championship title team that advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16.
