Waco, Texas -- The 2004 season got off to a good start for the Baylor soccer team as the Bears downed the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks 3-0 in the pre-season opener for both squads. In the victory, the Bears shut-down the Arkansas attack, out-shooting the Lady Razorbacks 22-6 on the night.
"We were really pleased in the way we came out and played," head coach George Van Linder said. "We were able to get solid contributions from many of the newcomers and from several players off the bench. Hopefully, we can build off this victory as the season draws closer."
Baylor grabbed the early 1-0 lead when senior forward Kristin Ruef headed a ball off the foot of freshman Margaret Kaderli from 10 yards out into the back of the net in the 22nd minute.
The score remained the same heading into halftime as the Bears defense was effective, holding the Lady Razorbacks to only three shots while drawing Arkansas offsides four times.
Baylor extended the lead to two goals only 2:09 into the second half, as Katie Chicoine, set up by a cross from Jessica Hutton, scored a goal from three yards out in the 48th minute.
Finally, in the 58th minute, Baylor put the game away as Hutton scored on a header from five yards out to give the Bears a 3-0 lead. The goal was set up when Chicoine had her shot deflected over to Hutton, who headed the ball into the empty net. Baylor's Brittani Zonker was also credited with an assist on the goal.
Newcomers Kristin Weegar and Ashley Holder combined to record the shutout, as Arkansas managed only two shots on goal in the contest.
Arkansas goalie Carrie Dillsaver recorded six saves while taking the loss.
Baylor will now look to make it two exhibition wins in a row, as the Bears travel to Houston to face the Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 21.
