LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Baylor soccer team scored a season-high four goals, all by freshmen, en route to a 4-0 win over McNeese State Friday night in Lake Charles, La. The win keeps the Bears' undefeated record in tact at 2-0-2, while the Cowgirls fall to 0-3-1.
Baylor outshot McNeese by a 20-7 margin, including putting 14 on goal. The Bears have recorded more shots than their opponents in each of their first four games.
"We created some really beautiful goals tonight," head coach Marci Jobson said. "I thought we started off a little slow, but we addressed it at half and really came out on fire in the second."
Baylor came out shooting early first half, registering its first shot just 47 seconds into the game. The Bears peppered the Cowgirl goal with nine shots before Bethany Johnston was fouled in the box by the goalkeeper in the 29th minute, setting up a penalty kick. Freshman Chelsea Geller buried the attempt in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
In all, BU took 12 shots in the opening half, forcing McNeese keeper, Cassandra Read, to make six saves.
Baylor continued the pressure in the second half and broke through in the 65th minute on a goal by Hanna Gilmore, her third of the season, to make it 2-0.
Gilmore struck again, this time on an assist, her third, to fellow freshman Larissa Campos, who put the ball away for her first goal of the season in the 70th minute, 3-0.
The Bears will finish off their road trip on Sunday, taking on Louisiana-Lafayette at 1:00 p.m. in Lafayette.
