JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- Four separate players scored, including two goals each by Lotto Smith and Carolyn Lynch, as the Baylor soccer team rolled to a 6-2 win over host Jacksonville in the opener of the Kick Out Cancer Tournament on Friday. With the win, Baylor improved to 3-0-1 on the season and is off to its best start since 2002 as Jacksonville fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss.
"We were really able to finish our chances tonight," head coach George Van Linder said. "When we fell behind early, the team really responded. I was proud of the way they came out and attacked from the start. It's always nice to put six goals on the board."
Jacksonville struck first in the 10th minute as Elizabeth Fink scored on a 30-yard strike to put the Dolphins up on top early.
The lead would not last for long; however, as three Baylor goals in an 11-minute span would put the Bears up on top to stay. Smith evened the score for the Bears as the freshman corralled a deflected shot and put in the back of the net for her first goal of the game in the 22nd minute.
Lynch's first career goal put the Bears on top to stay as she directed a pass from Megan Sherrell into the back of the net in the 26th minute to make the score 2-1.
The scoring outburst continued in the 33rd minute as Sherrell was once again involved in the goal. The senior connected with fellow senior Jessica Hutton as Hutton drilled a shot into the net for her second goal of the season, and sixth of her career, as Baylor took a 3-1 lead.
The score would remain the same until the 66th minute when Smith's second goal of the contest made the score 4-1. On a long pass from senior Rose Zapata, Smith found the back of the net for her first career multi-goal game as Baylor held a three goal cushion.
After Zwikker brought Jacksonville within two tallies in the 71st minute, Baylor responded with goals by Carolyn Lynch
in the 74th minute and Sherrell in the 86th as the Bears cruised to a 6-2 victory.
Lara Doherty was credited with an assist on Sherrell's goal as Baylor exploded for 16 points (6G, 4A) in the victory.
Sherrell led the way with four points in the contest as Lynch also picked up her first career multi-goal game.
The six-goal outburst gives Baylor 14 for the season, only one shy of the goal total for the Bears all of last season.
Ashley Noah picked up the victory in net as the senior stopped four shots while only allowing one goal as she improved to 3-0-1 on the season. Gianna Quintana saw 25 minutes of action in net for the Bears, allowing one goal while making one stop.
Rebecca Stott took the loss for Jacksonville after allowing six goals while making nine saves for the Dolphins.
Baylor out-shot Jacksonville, 21-13, as the Bears held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Bears will look to push their unbeaten streak to five as Baylor concludes play at the Kick Out Cancer Tournament when it squares off with Stetson on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 11:00 a.m.
