WACO, Texas - Baylor soccer will play its first of two exhibition matches before starting the 2014 season as the Bears host Sam Houston State at Betty Lou Mays Field on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 7 p.m. CT.
Following a successful Meet The Bears event Saturday, Baylor puts itself to the test for the first time this preseason against another foe. The annual intrasquad scrimmage saw a great turnout by the fans for free food and soccer. The Bears played a pair of 30 minute halves, ending with a 0-0 draw as senior goalie Michelle Kloss had three saves for Team Green and sophomore goalie Sara Martinson had two saves for Team White.
"I saw some good things from a lot of girls," said seventh-year BU Co-Head Coach Marci Jobson of the team's Saturday scrimmage. "We still have work to do but I like where we are at in this early part of the preseason. The girls have very high expectations for this season and they put in a lot of hard work over the summer, and it has shown. It will be good to matchup against someone other than ourselves so we can see what we need to keep working on to be ready for the regular season."
Coming off their first Big 12 Championship title in 2012, the Bears finished 11-6-3 in the 2013 season and just missed making the NCAA Tournament after qualifying for the previous two. A third straight NCAA postseason appearance would have been a program first. With 10 or more wins in each of the last four seasons for the first time since 2000, BU returns 16 players from the 2013 roster and welcomes seven newcomers for 2014. Among the returnees are 2013 first-team All-Big 12 junior forward Bri Campos and Kloss, who ranked second in the NCAA in 2013 goals against average (0.65) and third in save percentage (.817).
Sam Houston State went 9-11-1 last season and returns 18 players from the 2013 squad. The Bears and Bearkats last met on Aug. 19, 2011, in Waco to begin the 2011 season. BU came away with a 3-0 win while holding SHSU without a shot.
Prior to opening the season on Aug. 22 at home vs. Rice at 7 p.m., the Bears will face Florida in Gainesville on Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. for their second exhibition match. The Gators ended 2013 ranked No. 10 in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll with a 19-5-1 record, and are ranked No. 8 in the 2014 NSCAA preseason poll.
Along with all of Baylor's regular season home matches, Tuesday's exhibition is free to attend and will feature free posters, schedule cards and rosters. Live stats for the match will be available via GameTracker on BaylorBears.com.
