Soccer Heads to No. 8 Florida for Final Exhibition Tilt

Aug. 15, 2014

WACO, Texas - Baylor soccer heads to Gainesville, Florida, this weekend for its final exhibition match before starting the 2014 season. The Bears will face No. 8 Florida on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT.

Baylor enters the weekend after a 1-0 exhibition win in Waco over Sam Houston State on Tuesday night. Senior midfielder Alexa Wilde scored the game's lone goal in the 57th minute off a well-placed midfield free kick by junior defender Katie Daigle.

The Bears' trademark defense showed its normal self as BU posted edges in shots (9-5), shots on goal (5-3) and corner kicks (6-0). Sophomore goalie Sara Martinson got the start and played the whole 45-minute first half while making two saves. Senior goalie Michelle Kloss played the whole 45-minute second half and made one save.

Florida comes into the match after a 5-2 exhibition win at home over Florida International on Thursday night. Five different Gators scored goals in the match that featured three periods of 45, 30 and 20 minutes. In addition to being one of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) preseason top 10 teams, UF was picked by its league's coaches to win the SEC.

Coming off their first Big 12 Championship title in 2012, the Bears finished 11-6-3 in the 2013 season and just missed making the NCAA Tournament after qualifying for the previous two. A third straight NCAA postseason appearance would have been a program first. With 10 or more wins in each of the last four seasons for the first time since 2000, BU returns 16 players from the 2013 roster and welcomes seven newcomers for 2014. Among the returnees are 2014 Preseason All-Big 12 and 2013 first-team All-Big 12 junior forward Bri Campos and Kloss, who ranked second in the NCAA in 2013 goals against average (0.65) and third in save percentage (.817).

The Bears open the 2014 regular season on Friday, Aug. 22, vs. Rice at 7 p.m. in Waco at Betty Lou Mays Field. All BU home matches are free to attend. Stay tuned to the program by following @BaylorFutbol on Twitter.
