Soccer Returns Home to Face Colorado, Texas
After a tough opening to the Big 12 Conference portion of its season, the Baylor women's soccer team returns to the friendly confines of Betty Lou Mays Field to host Colorado and No. 4 Texas beginning on Friday.
The Bears are returning to action after suffering two losses last weekend on the road. Baylor held one-goal leads in contest, but allowed both Oklahoma (Oct. 4) and Oklahoma State (Oct. 6) to come-from-behind and top the Bears. Baylor last played at home on Sept. 30 when the Bears hosted then-No. 20 Missouri. The Tigers garnered a 4-2 victory over the Bears, handing Baylor its first home loss of the season. Baylor is 4-4-3 all-time against Colorado, but has not captured a win against the Buffaloes since Oct. 19, 2001, in a 3-0 win at home. Since that victory, the Bears have gone 0-3-2 against Colorado; however, Baylor holds a 3-2-1 record when playing the Buffaloes at home, out-scoring Colorado 9-3 at Betty Lou Mays Field. Following Friday's contest with Colorado, Baylor turns its attention to a Sunday meeting with No. 4 Texas. The Longhorns, ranked No. 1 in the most recent Soccer America poll, hold a 7-5-1 all-time record against Baylor. The Bears last topped the Longhorns in an overtime affair on Sept. 26, 2004, when Texas was ranked No. 22. Baylor is 2-3 against Texas at home, 3-4 when facing a nationally ranked Longhorn squad, and has never beaten the Longhorns when Texas is ranked higher than No. 21. "We are looking at both games as must-wins for our program," said head coach George Van Linder. "However, we understand that this is going to be some tough competition." Not only are the Bears facing two tough programs, both ranked in the top-five of the Big 12, but they are fighting off several injuries and trying to stay as healthy as possible. "Our team is staying positive despite several injuries we've suffered this season," Van Linder said. "We've put some strong competitors in to fill vacated starting positions and they are beginning to realize that they are a much bigger difference in the outcome of the game, whether that is a positive or a negative outcome for our team." Both contests are set to begin at 7:00 p.m. with Sunday's contest against Texas being broadcast on the All-Access portion of BaylorBears.com with Heath Nielsen and Justin Stottlemyre.
