WACO, Texas -
Baylor seniors Emily Fukuchi and Melissa Humke were named to the 2003 Academic All-District VI Women's Soccer First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and released Thursday. As first-team selections, both players are automatically nominated for Academic All-America honors.
Humke, a senior from The Woodlands, Texas, earned her second-straight Academic All-District First Team selection, becoming just the third Bear in program history to accomplish that feat, following Dawn Greathouse (1998-99) and Whitney Barrett (2001-02).
Fukuchi, a senior from Cerritos, Calif., was named to the first team this season after earning Academic All-District second-team honors a year ago.
Humke and Fukuchi are two of the nine players named to last year's Academic All-District VI teams who repeated the honor this season. Humke was the lone player to repeat on the first team, and Baylor was the only school to repeat more than one player this season.
Baylor was also the only program in Texas to earn more than one first-team selection. Ole Miss led District VI with three first-team honorees, with the Bears a close second.
To be considered for selection to an all-academic team, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible. Awards are voted on by members of CoSIDA.
