A two-run eighth inning propelled Southwest Texas State past Baylor 2-0 here Saturday in the second of two games for the Lady Bears at the Chuck Nash Southwest Texas State Invitational at Bobcat Field. Baylor won its first game of the day, downing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 8-0 in five innings.
The Lady Bears, who were the home team in the game with Southwest Texas, and the Bobcats were scoreless through seven innings, but the international tiebreaker rule was put into effect in the eighth inning. With one out and a runner at third, SWT's Ashley Koop tripled to center field to break the ice. Then Kristen Zaleski followed grounded to short, scoring Koop.
In the bottom of the inning, Baylor was not able to put anything together. Jessica Chase (1-0) continued her mastery of the Lady Bears, closing out a one-hit shutout with an infield pop up, a strike out and a grounder back to the mound. Shortstop Koral King got Baylor's lone hit, a one out single in the fourth, but she was one of three Lady Bear base runners stranded in scoring position in the game.
Joni Miller started for Baylor against SWT and allowed just three hits and one walk with five strike outs in five and one-third scoreless innings. Sarah Caudle (0-1) was saddled with the loss, she surrendered two runs, one earned, on one hit with a walk and two strike outs in two and two-thirds innings of relief.
In the first game, the Lady Bears used a 12-hit attack to run-rule Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in five innings. Baylor got three runs in the second, another in the third, and put two-spots on the board in both the fourth and fifth innings.
Kristen Lancaster got things started in the second with Baylor's first home run of the season, a solo blast that hit 15 feet up the light pole beyond the left-center wall. Kelly Fleming and Naomi Fitzgerald also added run-scoring singles in the inning. In the third, King led off with a double and later scored on a single by Stacey Hundley.
Baylor tacked on two more runs in the fourth thanks to an RBI-single by King, who then scored on a double by Ryan Stukel. The Lady Bears capped things in the fifth when Caudle drove in a pair of runs on a triple to right-center. Caudle then came in to pitch a scoreless bottom of the fifth, closing out game.
Caudle, Hundley and King each had two hits against the Islanders. Every starter in the Baylor lineup had at least one hit.
Miller (1-0) picked up the win, going four scoreless innings and allowing five hits and a walk with two strike outs. Starter Leah Smith (0-1) was touched for three runs, all earned, on five hits and a walk in one and two-thirds innings for TAMUCC. The Lady Bears also roughed up her replacement, Mealnie Drews, she allowed five runs, all earned, on seven hits and three walks in three and one-third innings of work.
In other action Friday, No. 20 Oregon defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 5-0, but fell to Southwest Texas State 3-2.
Action will continue here Saturday as the Lady Bears face SWT again at 10 a.m. and Oregon at 4 p.m.
