Feb. 11, 2012

WACO, Texas - The No. 7 Baylor softball team (2-0) used a pair of strong pitching performances from Whitney Canion and Courtney Repka to sweep day one of the 11th annual Getterman/QTI Classic on Friday at Getterman Stadium. Repka opened with a complete-game, six-strikeout appearance in a 5-1 win over Wichita State, while Canion threw a complete-game shutout to go with 12 strikeouts for a 4-0 win against Iowa (2-0) in game two.

"I thought our pitchers were terrific tonight," head coach Glenn Moore said. "Whitney and Courtney were what we need them to be. We hit the ball hard, just right at people at times, but I liked what I saw."

GAME ONE
No. 7 Baylor 5, Wichita State 1
Courtney Repka fanned six, while the BU bats provided 11 hits en route to a 5-1 win over Wichita State. Jordan Strickland, Kelsi Kettler, Kayce Walker and Holly Holl each added two hits for the Lady Bears.

Baylor opened the game with a two-spot in the first. Kathy Shelton led off the game with a single and came around to score on a throwing error from third. With Walker at third and one out, Canion pushed the BU lead to two with a sac fly to right field for the 2-0 advantage.

With Repka stifling the Shockers bats, Baylor took a 3-0 lead when Kaitlyn Thumann came on as a pinch runner and stole second, allowing Linsey Hays to make a break for home for the score.

Wichita State cut the lead to two when Kettler tried to throw Osborn out at second, but the throw was wide and rolled to the wall, allowing Osburn to score to make it 3-1.

Kettler led off the seventh with a double to right center and advanced to third on a passed ball. That set up Strickland for a double to deep center, scoring Kettler to make it 4-1. Walker followed with a single through the right side for an RBI and 5-1 lead that Repka closed out in order in the bottom half.

GAME TWO
No. 7 Baylor 4, Iowa 0

Whitney Canion struck out 12, allowing just one hit in a complete-game effort to help lead the Lady Bears to a 4-0 win over Iowa. The redshirt junior has now struck out 11 or more in each of her last three season openers.

Neither Canion or Iowa starter, Kayla Massey allowed a base runner until two outs in the top of the fourth when Liz Watkins singled to left. Canion shut down the threat, however, with a three-pitch strikeout.

The Lady Bears picked up their first hit of the game off a Kathy Shelton single to second, making it her 18th consecutive game to reach safely. After stealing second and advancing to third on a groundout from Walker, Shelton came around on an error at third for a 1-0 lead.

Canion allowed just one base runner the rest of the way, as the Lady Bears scored three in the sixth for an extra cushion. With one out, Walker singled Shelton, who reached on a fielder's choice, over to third. Holl hit a grounder to second that was bobbled to allow Shelton to score for a 2-0 advantage. Megan Turk notched a pair of RBI on a single to right center to round out scoring for BU en route to the win.

Baylor will take on Arkansas (1-1) on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. followed by Belmont (0-2) at 5:00 p.m. at Getterman Stadium.
