WACO, Texas- The No. 7 Baylor softball team (3-1) split on day two of the Getterman/QTI Classic, falling to Arkansas 5-1 before bouncing back with a 10-5 win over Belmont in the nightcap. Kathy Shelton went 4-for-9 with two doubles, three runs and two RBI on the night.
"It starts in the circle and we struggled giving free passes," head coach Glenn Moore said. "I was glad to see our offense get going a bit in the second game, but we need to remember that it's just the start of a long season."
Arkansas 5, No. 7 Baylor 1
The Lady Bears allowed nine walks, the most in program history, falling to Arkansas 5-1 in game one.
Liz Paul (0-1) took the loss, going 3.1 innings, allowing two hits, three runs, two earned, five walks and four strikeouts. Courtney Repka came on in relief for the last 3.2 innings, giving up three hits, two runs, four walks and one strikeout. The Razorbacks took a 1-0 lead in the third after a leadoff walk came around to score on a Wallace double to left center.
Baylor answered back in the bottom half when Shelton doubled over the center fielder's head with one out and advanced to third on a flyout from Kayce Walker. That allowed Holly Holl to deliver an RBI-single to second for a tie game.
Arkansas grabbed the lead back in the fourth with a one-out walk from Martindale, who reached second safely on an errant throw from Holl at first on a fielder's choice. Mort then delivered a two-RBI double for the 3-1 lead.
Another two-run double padded the Razorbacks lead in the fifth en route to the win. Despite the loss, Baylor outhit Arkansas, 6-5.
No. 7 Baylor 10, Belmont 5
Baylor pounded out 14 hits, including a seven-run second inning, on its way to a 10-5 win over Belmont in game two.
With her 3-for-5 performance, Kathy Shelton has reached safely in 20-straight games dating back to last season. In addition, she and Holly Holl have extended their hit streaks to seven, also dating back to last season.
The Lady Bears posted seven runs on six hits to grab a commanding 7-0 lead in the top of the second. Linsey Hays, Megan Turk and Delaney Guy hit three-straight singles to load the bases before Shelbi-Redfearn drew a four-pitch walk for an RBI and 1-0 advantage. Clare Hosack then ripped a double to left center to clear the bases for a 4-0 lead. Sydney Wilson battled for a walk and Shelton brought Hosack around on a double to make it 5-0, and a Walker grounder to first scored Wilson from third for the sixth run. Holl then notched an RBI off a grounder to second to wrap up the scoring.
After striking out two batters in the first, Hays (1-0) found trouble in the second. Making her first career start, the freshman allowed four hits but was let down by three BU errors that led to three unearned runs and five total to cut the Baylor lead to two.
But the Lady Bears answered right back with three more in the third, as Guy led off with a single up the middle, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. A groundout from Hosack brought her around for an 8-5 lead. Wilson then delivered a double to left, followed by a Shelton single to put runners on the corners. Shelton swiped second to get into scoring position, allowing Holl to hit a ground ball between the legs of the second baseman to score two more for a 10-5 lead.
Liz Paul worked 2.0 innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two, while Canion fanned five of the six batters she faced in 2.0 innings.
Baylor will wrap up play on Sunday against UT Arlington (3-1) beginning at 1:00 p.m. The game can be heard live on 1660 ESPN Central Texas.
