Feb. 12, 2012

WACO, Texas - Whitney Canion recorded her third career no hitter, striking out 15 in five innings of play en route to an 11-0 win for the No. 7 Lady Bears (4-1) over UT Arlington (3-2) on day three of the Getterman/QTI Classic, Sunday afternoon.

"I had command of all my pitches today," Canion said. "My arm felt good, despite the cold, and everything just clicked for me."

All three of Canion's career no-hitters have been in 5.0 innings, with the last coming on March 17, 2009 against Prairie View A&M.

The Mavericks failed to put one ball in play the entire game, only reaching base twice via walks. Of the 15 strikeouts, 12 came on swinging strike-three's.

Megan Turk led the way offensively for BU, collecting three hits, while Kayce Walker added two hits and two RBI and Holly Holl added three RBI. Walker and Kathy Shelton each tied career highs with three runs apiece, while Shelton extended her hit streak to eight games and her on-base streak to 21.

"This was a complete dominant performance in all areas," head coach Glenn Moore said. "Whitney was great and our offense was clicking on all cylinders."

The Lady Bears jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one, loading the bases in the first on a Shelton walk, a Walker single and Holl walk. Canion then delivered one of her two RBI on a walk of her own for a 1-0 advantage. Turk followed with a single through the left side for an RBI, scoring Walker to make it 2-0. Delaney Guy and Clare Hosack each added sac flies in the inning to round out the scoring.

Baylor posted two more on the board in the second with an RBI-double from Walker that scored Shelton and sac fly from Canion to shallow left that brought Walker home from third.

Canion struck out the first eight batters of the game, before issuing a walk with two outs in the third.

BU posted four more runs in the third with Walker posting another RBI after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Holl then blasted a double to right center, clearing the bases for 3 RBI and a 10-0 lead. The final run of the day came off an RBI-single up the middle from Liz Paul, scoring Jordan Strickland.

Canion struck out four-straight following a walk before issuing a free pass to lead off the fifth, but quieted any threat with three-straight strikeouts to end the game.

Baylor will hit the road for a three-game series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beginning on Friday, Feb. 17 at 1:00 p.m.
