HONOLULU, Hawaii - No. 15 Baylor (22-4) was unable to find a timely hit in a 3-0 loss to No. 4 Cal (21-2) on day one of the Chevron Spring Fling Wednesday afternoon in Honolulu. The Lady Bears are now 1-1 against ranked foes this season.

“We put the ball in play against one of the best pitchers in the nation, but we just couldn’t catch the breaks,” head coach Glenn Moore said. “I thought Whitney (Canion) pitched a great game and we went toe-to-toe with a great team.”

Canion (11-3) took the loss despite allowing just five hits, three runs, two earned, walking one and striking out seven in 6.0 innings.

Kathy Shelton had two of the three Baylor hits, as Kaitlyn Thumann recorded the other.

Cal struck first on a dropped fly ball in right, allowing a run to score with two outs, for the 1-0 lead. With two away, a fly ball off the bat of Danielle Henderson was sent to right field and dropped at the last second that allowed Ashley Decker to score from first.

Baylor threatened in the top of the inning, as Shelton sent a one-out single to left and advanced to second on a botched fielder’s choice. Linsey Hays grounded to short, but the throw to get Shelton at second went wide of the bag. Sarah Smith stepped up and hit a grounder deep in the hole at short that carried the shortstop to make the successful throw to third for the second out. Clare Hosack ended the inning with a grounder to first.

The Lady Bears looked to have something going in the top of the sixth with Thumann leading off with a single to short. Shelton battled to a 3-2 count and slapped a ball foul that was caught by the third baseman, doubling off Thumann at first with the hit-and-run on.

Cal got a three-run cushion, plating two more in the sixth off an RBI-double from Jolene Henderson. Henderson smacked an opposite field shot down the right field line, passed the diving glove of Thumann, rolling all the way to the wall. The one-out double plated Decker (hit by pitch) and Lindsay Ziegenhirt, who singled.

Baylor will look to bounce back with a pair of games on Friday. The Lady Bears play Utah at 7 p.m. CT and follow with Syracuse immediately after. Both games can be heard on
