LUBBOCK, Texas -
The Baylor softball team (24-10, 2-0) collected six extra base hits en route to a 6-1 victory over Texas Tech (10-26, 0-4) on a windy Sunday at Rocky Johnson Field in Lubbock. The Lady Bears recorded 12 hits by nine different batters and extended their win streak to six and took the first two conference games for the first time sine 2007.
Freshman Whitney Canion (14-8) picked up her 17th complete game of the season, allowing six hits, giving up one earned run, walking one and striking out nine. Nicole Wesley led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a double, one of six extra base-hits on the day. Along with Wesley, Alex Colyer picked up a pair of doubles, while Megan Turk and Jordan Vannatta each had a double to go with Tiffany Wesley's triple.
Scoreless after three, Baylor jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth with a Colyer double to lead off the inning. Bree Hanafin then reached aboard on an error by the first baseman to advance Colyer to third, and following a Courtney Oberg walk, N. Wesley delivered a two-RBI single for a 2-0 advantage.
A third run crossed in the sixth, as Colyer again led off with a double and came around to score on a double by N. Wesley for a three-run lead.
Baylor tacked on a pair of insureance runs in the seventh with Vannatta leading off with a double, and coming around to score on a triple by T. Wesley. Kayce Walker then singled up the middle to bring Wesley home, and a Hana fin single allowed Walker to score from second after taking the base on the steal.
The Red Raiders added one run in the seventh on an RBI-single with the bases loaded, but could not bring make it any closer as Canion retired the final two batters on strikeouts to end any comeback hope.
Baylor will take on Central Arkansas on Monday at 5:00 p.m. at Getterman Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was changed due to the threat of rain.
