SAN MARCOS. - Holly Holl had a home run and four RBI as No. 16 Baylor (30-10) finally shook off Texas State (9-29) with a 7-3 win in 10 innings at Bobcat Field on Tuesday evening in San Marcos.

“While you might hope for an easier win, if I were to draw up the game to get us prepared for Oklahoma State, it would look like that,” head coach Glenn Moore said. “Texas State challenged us in every facet of the game and made us work hard for everything.”

Holl had a season high three hits along with tying a career high with four RBI. Jordan Strickland had her second home run of the year, while Kaitlyn Thumann and Linsey Hays each added a pair of hits for the BU offense.

Whitney Canion (16-6) earned the win, going 9.0 innings, giving up six hits, allowing just one earned run, walking nine and striking out 10. Liz Paul came on and struck three in the final inning with a four-run lead.

The Lady Bears jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Kathy Shelton walked and stole second, one of two steals for the senior, and advanced to third on a groundout. With one away, Holl hit a sac fly in foul territory in left for the one-run cushion.

Baylor had an opportunity to extend its lead in the fourth, but despite four hits, it stranded the bases loaded and couldn’t get a run. Thumann led the inning off with her first double and advanced to third on a bunt-single from Holl, but got picked off rounding third for the first out. Hays and Sarah Smith added singles to load the bases, but Kelsi Kettler and Canion couldn’t bring runs around.

An RBI-single from Coralee Ramirez in the sixth tied the game at 1-1. With the bases loaded and two away, Clare Hosack fired to second to pick off the runner and keep the game even at one.

The game went to extras and the International Tiebreak Rule, placing Hosack at second to start the eighth. Strickland laid down the sac bunt, but that was all the further Hosack would make it.

Holl struck in the ninth with a two-run blast to lead off the inning, her third of the year, giving BU the 3-1 lead.

The Bobcats evened the game again in the bottom of the ninth. A single and sac bunt put runners at second and third with one out. Canion got a grounder to short that was fielded but thrown in the dirt to first, hopping up and going out of play, allowing a pair of runs to score to tie the game. An intentional walk and four-pitch walk loaded the bases, and Canion found herself behind 3-1 to Hernandez, but the lefty reached back for a strikeout to keep the game even.

The Lady Bears found its stride with four runs in the 10th, as Strickland powered a two-run shot over left center for the 5-1 lead. Shelton walked and stole second, allowing Thumann to lace her second double for an RBI and 6-3 lead. Holl added an RBI-double to right center, for the 7-3 advantage.

Baylor will step back in to Big 12 play, hosting Oklahoma State beginning on Fri., April 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Getterman Stadium.
