COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Whitney Canion tied a career high with 15 strikeouts to guide No. 11 Baylor (41-12) to a 4-0 win over Lehigh (33-22) to open NCAA Regional play on Friday evening in College Park, Maryland. Canion's strikeout of the second batter of the game gave her the program's all-time record in strikeouts, as the sophomore now has 774.
"Whitney was light's out this evening and looked like the great pitcher she is," head coach Glenn Moore said. "I thought we did a pretty good job offensively, but we need to improve as the tournament goes on."
Canion's 15 strikeouts were the most since posting the same number against New Mexico on Feb. 19. She now has nine 10-plus strikeout games on the year. Canion (25-9) recorded her fifth complete-game shutout of the year, allowing just two hits, no runs or walks and two hit-by-pitches.
Baylor jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second with five hits in the inning. A one-out double from Holly Holl put her at second and a single from Canion put runners at first and third. Shelbi Redfearn then laced an RBI-double down the first base line for the first run of the game, and with two away, KJ Freeland singled through the right side for a 2-0 advantage. Shelton wrapped up the scoring with a hard grounder off the pitcher's glove, scoring Redfearn for a 3-0 lead.
Canion retired 10-straight after a single with two outs in the second, before a hit-by-pitch led off the sixth.
Redfearn led off the fourth being hit by the first pitch, and advanced to second on a sac bunt from Clare Hosack. With two outs, Shelton came through with her second RBI of the day, a ripped shot to right for the 4-0 advantage.
The shutout was the 12th of the season for Baylor, who will now face East Carolina on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. CDT on ESPN Central Texas Radio.
