The Baylor softball squad saw their season end when they were upset by Iowa State, 6-3, in the 2000 Big 12 Softball at Don Porter ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla.
The 10th-seeded Cyclones scored three runs in the second inning
and two more in the third to take control of the contest. Lauren Cathey
launched her first home run of the year, a two-run blast, in the top of the
second to put ISU up 3-0. The Bears, the tournament's No. 7 seed, responded
with a run in the bottom of the second on a Kelly Fleming solo shot, her seventh of the season, before Cinnamon Gooding's second homer of the year gave the Cyclones a 5-3 lead in the third. Baylor scored a run in the bottom of the third to trim the margin to 5-2, but, despite threatening late in the contest, could not pull closer than three runs. Baylor stranded nine runners on the basepaths.
Pitcher Mandy Loushin pitched a complete game for Iowa State, giving up two
earned runs on six hits. She struck out three and walked three while upping
her record to 3-8. Baylor starter freshman Joni Miller threw 3.1 innings and gave up five runs (all earned) on six hits. Miller's record dropped to 14-12. Senior Carrie Arn took over for Miller in the fourth inning and gave up three hits and one run. Sophomore outfielder Sarah Sharp led the Bears at the plate going 2-for-4 on the night.
The Cyclones, now 18-27 on the year, play No. 2 seed Nebraska Thursday at 12:30
p.m. The Bears fell to 27-30 on the season with the defeat.
