WACO, Texas - Baylor senior left-handed pitcher Whitney Canion was once again named to the "Watch List" for the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. Fifty student-athletes from across the country were selected by the National Governing Body for softball in the United States as prospects for the year-end award.
Canion is in her sixth year with the Baylor Bears after receiving two medical redshirts. She was also named to the USA Softball preseason list in 2012. Canion was a 2011 all-American and is the Lady Bears' all-time leader in wins and strikeouts heading into 2014.
The Top 25 Finalists for the 2014 USA Collegiate Player of the Year award will be announced April 9. While an athlete does not have to be on the "Watch List" to be considered for the Top 25, the eventual USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will come from the Top 25. The list will be progressively narrowed down and the final winner announced May 27 prior to the start of the 2014 NCAA Women's College World Series.
Baylor, ranked No. 16 in the nation by USA Softball, begins its 2014 campaign in Las Vegas, Nev. at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic, Feb. 7-9 with the season opener against No. 3-ranked Washington Feb. 7 at 10 a.m.
