The Baylor softball team will open the 2013 season at home for the third straight season as it begins the 12th annual Getterman Classic.
The Lady Bears will open play on Thursday against Illinois State at 5:30 p.m. The four-day event will srap up with a game against Northern Illinois at Noon on Sunday.

SCOUTING THE GETTERMAN FIELD
Illinois State is coming off a second-place finish in the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference, advancing to the Columbia, Mo., NCAA Regional final. This season the Redbirds are picked as co-favorites of the Valley, seeking their 13th conference title. ISU and Baylor met last season, with the Redbirds winning 6-4 in the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla.
After finishing second last season, Sam Houston State was picked as the preseason favorite to win the Southland Conference. The Bearkats, who finished 29-21 in 2012, and Lady Bears last squared off on Feb. 25, 2011 in Waco with BU taking a 9-4 victory.
Northern Illinois is coming off a last place finish in the West Division of the MAC Conference standings, going 7-15 and 19-34 overall. The 2013 Huskies will be under first-year head coach Christina Sutcliffe, who was an assistant the last seven seasons at Miami (Ohio) University.
LET’S GET IT STARTED... AT HOME
The Lady Bears will begin the season at home for the third-consecutive season. Under head coach Glenn Moore, Baylor is 10-2 in season-opening games, 10-0 when opening the season at home and 12-0 in its first home game.
GETTERMAN CLASSIC SUCCESS
Baylor has been successful at the Getterman Classic, with an overall record of 51-6 in the tournament’s 11-year history, racking up six titles.
This will be the first trip to the Getterman Classic for all three of BU’s opponents.
LADY BEARS PICKED THIRD IN PRESEASON BIG 12 CONFERENCE POLL
Baylor was picked to finish third in the preseason Big 12 poll. The Lady Bears were chosen third for the fourth time in program history after previously being selected in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Oklahoma (36 points) was picked to win the league and received six first-place votes. Texas notched 29 points and one first-place vote, coming in second behind the Sooners. The Lady Bears were one point behind in third, receiving 28 points, while Texas Tech landed in fourth with a total of 20. Oklahoma State (16), Kansas (12) and Iowa State (6) rounded out this year’s preseason poll.
Redshirt junior, Whitney Canion returns to the circle for the Lady Bears after pitching just eight games in 2012 before tearing the ACL in her left knee. She went 5-1 with a 0.35 ERA and had 66 strikeouts in 40 innings in 2012. Canion is Baylor’s all-time leader in career strikeouts (898) and strikeouts/7 innings pitched (9.55). The Aledo, Texas, native is in the top-5 of 13 different BU career pitching categories.
EXPERIENCE IN THE CIRCLE
The Lady Bears pitching staff returns three players with considerable pitching experience. Combined, Whitney Canion (68), Courtney Repka (45) and Liz Paul (19) have combined for 132 wins during their careers.
