BAYLOR SOFTBALL HOSTS GETTERMAN CLASSIC

After months of preparation, the No. 18 Baylor softball team (0-0) is ready for the first pitch of the 2007 season as the Lady Bears host the sixth-annual Getterman Classic at Getterman Stadium beginning on Friday, Feb. 9. The Lady Bears open play at the tournament at 4:15 p.m. against Southern Miss before meeting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 6:30 p.m.

The Lady Bears enter the 2007 season with eight letterwinners returning from last year's squad that saw Baylor go 38-22, finish in third-place in the Big 12 Conference and advancing to the NCAA Corvallis Regional final.

Baylor has dominated play at the Getterman Classic, going 24-3 all-time at the tournament after capturing the 2005 title with a perfect 6-0 record and finishing in second-place with a 2-2 record.

Kentucky, Southern Miss, Stephen F. Austin and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi form a versatile Getterman Classic field as the Lady Bears hold a 36-21 all-time record against the teams in the sixth-annual tournament. The classic opens when Stephen F. Austin faces Southern Miss on Friday, Feb. 9, at 9:30 a.m.

All Baylor games at the Getterman Classic can be heard live on the internet at www.baylorbears.com.

THE SIXTH-ANNUAL GETTERMAN CLASSIC

Baylor opens its 2007 season the weekend of Feb. 9, hosting Kentucky, Southern Miss, Stephen F. Austin and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the sixth-annual Getterman Classic presented by Compass Bank and Hilton. Action gets underway Friday, Feb. 9, at 9:30 a.m. as Stephen F. Austin takes on Southern Miss.

This is the sixth rendition of the Getterman Classic, presented by Compass Bank and Hilton. Baylor won each of the first two Getterman Classics, going 6-0 both years, before Pacific captured the 2004 title with a 5-0 record. Baylor reclaimed the title in 2005, posting a perfect 6-0 record as Tulsa claimed the 2006 title with a 3-1 record. In 27 games, Baylor is 24-3 all-time at the Getterman Classic as the Lady Bears have out-scored opponents 179-44 over the five-year history of the tournament.

SCOUTING KENTUCKY

Kentucky enters the 2007 season with 11 letterwinners returning from last year's 21-36 squad that finished fifth in the Southeastern Conference East Division.

The Wildcats top returning player is senior Katie Campbell, who hit .315 last season with 17 runs scored and 42 RBI. In addition, Kentucky returns Brooke Marnitz, a .309 hitter last season who scored 24 runs while recording 18 RBI.

In the circle, Kentucky returns Lindsay Brogdon, a junior who posted a 3-2 record and 4.59 ERA last season in 39.2 innings of work. Samantha Allen also returns for the Wildcats after posting a mark of 2-3 and a 4.04 ERA a season ago.

This marks the first appearance for Kentucky in the Getterman Classic as the Wildcats are 0-3 all-time against the Lady Bears. This marks the first time the teams have met since 2005 when Baylor claimed a 3-0 victory in Houston, Texas. The meeting between the two squads will be the first of the series in Waco.

SCOUTING SOUTHERN MISS

Southern Miss enters the 2007 season after finishing the 2006 campaign with a 29-38 overall record and a C-USA record of 11-13.

The Lady Eagle return Jennifer Fox, a preseason all-C-USA selection. Last season, Fox recorded a .319 batting average, with 11 doubles, seven home runs and 46 RBIs, placing her on the 2006 All-Conference First Team.

In the circle, Southern Miss is led by Samantha Davis, who finished last season with a 3-5 record and 3.05 ERA in 78.0 innings pitched.

This marks the Lady Eagles first appearance at the Getterman Classic and the third meeting between the Lady Bears and Southern Miss all-time. In two previous meetings, the squads split games as the Lady Bears picked up a 5-4 victory the last-time the two teams met in 2001.

SCOUTING STEPHEN F. AUSTIN

Stephen F. Austin enters the Getterman Classic after posting a 20-28 record last season and finishing in ninth place in the Southland Conference standings. The Ladyjacks return 10 letterwinners from last year's squad as head coach Jenifer Wells enters her second season in the Stephen F. Austin program.

In the circle, Stephen F. Austin will likely be led by Karie Huge who finished last season with a 2-6 record and 4.95 ERA after 76.1 innings of work.

At the plate, the Ladyjacks will likely be paced by Jessica Tullos, who hit .299 last season with four home runs and 13 RBI.

This marks the first time the Ladyjacks will appear at the Getterman Classic as Stephen F. Austin has dropped nine of its last 10 meetings against the Lady Bears. Baylor owns a 26-18 all-time record against the Ladyjacks as the Lady Bears have won five straight in the series dating back to a 4-2 loss in 2003.

SCOUTING TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi enters the 2007 season after posting a 10-35 record last season as the Islanders travel to the Getterman Classic for the first time in school history.

The Islanders return Erica Armenta for the 2007 campaign after the outfielder led the team last year with a .277 batting average and 12 runs scored from a year ago.

In the circle, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will likely be paced by Jennifer Cummings. Last season, Cummings posted a 3-17 record and 5.61 ERA while striking out 63 in 112.1 innings of work.

Baylor owns a 6-2 lead in the series; however, the two teams have split over the last four contests. Last season, Baylor claimed a resounding 14-0 victory over the Islanders in Houston, Texas.

GETTERMAN STADIUM KIND TO LADY BEARS

Heading into the 2007 season, Baylor's home field of Getterman Stadium has been kind to the Lady Bears as BU owns a career 143-52 mark at the home park since the stadium opened in 1999. Last year, Baylor went 21-8 in the friendly confines of Getterman Stadium as no Lady Bears team has lost more than 10 games at home in a single season.

Baylor's best mark at home came during the 2004 campaign when the Lady Bears enjoyed a 26-4 record at home, including a 24-2 mark during the regular season.

In the stadium's six years of existence, attendance has steadily risen as Baylor set a pair of attendance records last season. Last season, Baylor set a single-game attendance record when 1,455 fans attended the BU-Texas game to close out the home portion of the schedule.

BAYLOR SOFTBALL IN THE NATIONAL POLLS

The Baylor softball team is currently ranked No. 18 in the preseason ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll released at the start of the season. In addition, Baylor earned a No. 18 ranking in the preseason USA Today/NFCA Top 25.

Baylor is one of five Big 12 Conference school ranked in the preseason polls as Texas A&M (No. 13, No. 14), Nebraska (No. 15, No. 15), Oklahoma (No. 16, No. 16) and Texas (No. 17, No. 18) join the Lady Bears in the polls.

Arizona, the defending national champion, opens the season as the top-ranked team in both polls.

Baylor's appearance in both polls marks the 43rd consecutive week the Lady Bears have appeared in the NFCA Top 25 and the 42nd consecutive week the team has appeared in the USA Softball Top 25. The last time Baylor failed to appear in either poll was March 16, 2004.
