WACO, Texas - Junior shortstop Jordan Strickland helped the No. 14-ranked Baylor Bears begin the 2014 softball season at 4-1, and she was honored by the Big 12 Tuesday as the conference's Player of the Week.
Strickland was 7-for-15 at the plate with five runs scored, three home runs and a team-high nine RBI over the five games. She drove in a career-high four runs in a 9-1 win over San Diego Friday, which was a result of her first career grand slam.
Strickland's three home runs in 2014 are a personal best after she hit two apiece in her freshman and sophomore seasons. She added a solo home run against UNLV Saturday and closed the tournament with a two-run shot against Arkansas Sunday.
"It's just a testament to how hard she worked in the offseason to get better at the plate," said Baylor head coach Glenn Moore of Strickland. "It's good to see her rewarded early for it, and it shows how the effort has paid off."
Baylor opened the season at UNLV's Sportco Kick-off classic losing only to No. 3 Washington while collecting wins over San Diego, UC Davis, UNLV and Arkansas. The Bears jumped from No. 16 to No. 14 in the USA Softball Top 25 and from No. 18 to No. 16 in the NFCA National Top 25.
The Lady Bears will play host to the annual Getterman Classic Friday through Sunday at Getterman Stadium. Baylor will play UAB and Drake Friday, Lipscomb and Iowa Saturday and East Carolina Sunday.
