WACO, Texas – A February ice storm shuffled and threatened Baylor softball’s annual Getterman Classic, but the No. 14/16 Lady Bears will play host to five teams, Friday through Sunday, in the round-robin event.
East Carolina was initially scheduled to play in the tournament but was forced to drop due to flight cancellations Wednesday. That opened the door for No. 18/14 Missouri (0-0) to join the tournament after the Tigers’ tournament in Jacksonville, Fla. was cancelled. In addition, UAB’s (1-3) flights were canceled, but the Blazers were able to find ground transportation and are expected to participate on schedule.
Drake (0-4), Lipscomb (4-0) and Iowa (2-2) will join Baylor (4-1), UAB and Missouri in the tournament; all visiting teams are making its first appearances in the Getterman with the exception of Iowa. The Hawkeyes finished 3-2 at the Getterman Classic in 2012.
The Lady Bears will face UAB and Drake Friday at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively followed by Lipscomb and Iowa Saturday at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively. Baylor will take on its nationally ranked opponent, Missouri, at 11 a.m. Sunday to close the tournament, and BU will see the Tigers again Feb. 20 in Palm Springs, Calif. in both teams’ opening game of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Baylor’s only loss during opening weekend in Las Vegas, Nev. came at the hands of No. 3 Washington, 7-4. The Bears hit .396 as a team, belted nine homers and picked up wins over San Diego, UC Davis, UNLV and Arkansas.
After BU’s home tournament, the Lady Bears will play 12 games away from Getterman Stadium before returning home March 6 vs. Louisiana Tech at 6 p.m.
