IRVING, Texas - For the sixth time in her career, junior Whitney Canion was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. The Aledo, Texas, native has more conference weekly awards than any BU player in program history.
Canion, who last won the award on March 15, 2011, threw her third career no-hitter, striking out 15 batters in 5.0 innings en route to a 11-0 win over UT Arlington on Feb. 12 at the Getterman/QTI Classic. The lefty, who had two walks, did not allow any UTA player to put the ball in play throughout the game, as every out was via strikeout. She finished the weekend 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA allowing one hit in 14.0 innings, striking out 32 and walking just three. In addition, she threw two complete-game shutouts and made three appearances. On Feb. 10, Canion struck out 12 batters and allowed only one hit in 7.0 innings of work for a 4-0 win over Iowa.
Canion and the Lady Bears will hit the road for a three-game series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beginning Friday at 1:00 p.m.
