The No. 9 Baylor softball team (8-1) will host its second tournament of the year, as teams from across Texas will take part in the first annual Fairfield Inn North-Texas Shootout on Feb. 24-26. The six-team tournament will be hosted at two locations, Getterman Stadium and Southwestern Region Little League Complex, and will feature 15 games.

"This is a great field with all Texas teams," head coach Glenn Moore said. "We expect some great crowds and great softball to be played in Waco this weekend."

The Lady Bears have won six-straight games after a doubleheader sweep of Northwestern State on Feb. 21. The Baylor pitching staff ranks second in the Big 12 with a 0.80 ERA, with Whitney Canion (0.26 ERA) and Courtney Repka (0.62 ERA) ranking second and fifth, respectively in the conference. Canion leads the Big 12 in opponent batting average (.062), strikeouts (52) and strikeouts per seven innings (13.48).

Offensively, Kathy Shelton has begun the season on a torrid pace, leading BU in batting average (.448), runs (12), hits (13) and stolen bases (5) while carrying a 14-game hitting and 25-game on-base streak. As a team, the Lady Bears sit third in the Big 12 with a .316 batting average and are second in stolen bases (20). In addition to Shelton, Kayce Walker has reached safely in all eight games she has played this season.

"This is the beginning of a very important stretch for us," Moore said. "This is a talented field of teams, but we need to focus on ourselves and start finding a rhythm."

Baylor will open play against UTEP on Friday at 3 p.m. followed by a game against Stephen F. Austin at 5:30 p.m. BU will face Texas State at 3:00 p.m. Saturday and North Texas at 5:30 p.m. The tournament will wrap on Sunday with fifth, third and first place games beginning at 10:00 a.m.. The Field:

Baylor holds a 118-52 all-time against the field.

North Texas (4-3) is on a three-game winning streak after going 3-0 at its hosted tournament last weekend. The Mean Green are batting .299 and have a 4.17 staff ERA. Baylor leads the series 20-7.

SFA (3-7) has dropped three of its last four games and enter with a .211 team batting average, led by Cadie Weaver's .458 clip. In the circle, the Ladyjacks hold a 7.00 ERA, with Carlie Davis (2-4 overall) leading with a 5.06 mark. Baylor leads the series 31-18.

Texas State (4-6) enters after winning three of its last four. The Bobcats have shut out two of their last three opponents and hold a 5.25 ERA. Offensively, Texas State is hitting .254. Baylor leads the series 32-15.

Texas Tech (7-4) has won six consecutive games entering the weekend. Hitting .251 as a team, Tech has totlaed 12 home runs. In the circle, the Red Raiders hold a 3.60 ERA and have held four of their last five opponents to two runs or less. Baylor leads the series 35-11.

UTEP (4-5) has dropped four straight after losing all four games at the Mardi Gras Classic in Lafayette, La. The Miners lead the tournament field with 13 home runs and are second with a .294 batting average, while holding a 6.05 ERA. UTEP leads the series with BU 1-0.
