Feb. 25, 2014
WACO, Texas - Whitney Canion didn't allow an earned run in 21 innings of work, picking up a save and a 3-0 record, while Baylor went 4-1 at this weekend's Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. For her performance, Canion was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for the eighth time in her career.
Canion is 7-2 on the season with a 1.10 ERA, but since she surrendered six earned runs to No. 3 Washington in the season opener in Las Vegas, she's only allowed three earned runs in her last 54 innings of work (0.39 ERA).
At the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Thursday thru Sunday, Canion picked up a two-inning save vs. No. 16 Missouri Thursday night, beat No. 11 Stanford Friday, and picked up wins against California and Northwestern Saturday and Sunday, respectively. She capped the weekend with a four-hit shutout in BU's 4-0 win over Northwestern; it was the 32nd career shutout for the senior lefty.
"Whitney has pitched at a high level for a long time for this program," said Baylor head coach Glenn Moore. "It's nice to see her rewarded for her work, but we're more excited about the leadership that she brings to this program."
The Lady Bears are 12-3 heading into a doubleheader Wednesday night with Southern Miss (4-10) in Hattiesburg, Miss. at 5 p.m.
