WACO, Texas - The Baylor Bears jumped three spots in both the NFCA and USA Today National Top 25 polls to No. 12 as the team heads to Mississippi this week for seven games on the road. Baylor (12-3) is coming off a 4-1 performance at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. last weekend.
The Lady Bears will take on Southern Miss (4-10) Wednesday in Hattiesburg, Miss. for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. before heading to Gulfport for the first annual Gulf Coast Classic featuring 10 teams.
Baylor is producing offensively and defensively to begin the season highlighted by a pair of seniors. Baylor's 1.37 team ERA leads the Big 12 with Whitney Canion's 7-2 record and 1.10 ERA leading the charge. Baylor is hitting .327 as a team with Clare Hosack's 16 RBI highlighting the Lady Bears' run production through 15 games.
Canion's complete-game shutout vs. Northwestern Sunday gave the senior lefthander 99 career wins. Canion's next win would make her the seventh player in Big 12 history to reach 100 career wins.
Following the doubleheader Wednesday, Baylor will take on five opponents at the inaugural Gulf Coast Classic in Gulfport, Miss. Friday thru Sunday, which will include games vs. No. 16 South Alabama and No. 24 Louisiana.
