Kaitlyn Thumann leads the Big 12 in hitting and has reached base safely in 40 consecutive games

WACO, Texas – The No. 12-ranked Baylor softball team has enjoyed four tournaments this season, finishing 4-1 at all four to begin the season at 16-4. Thursday, the Lady Bears will finally play a single game in front of the home fans at Getterman Stadium vs. Louisiana Tech (8-11) at 6 p.m.

The Bears rank No. 1 in the Big 12 in pitching this season with a 1.54 ERA and have used a mix of newcomers and veterans for the strong start. Offensively, junior Kaitlyn Thumann leads the Big 12 in batting average at a .462 clip and has reached base in 40 consecutive games dating back to last season. From the circle, senior Whitney Canion has eight wins while sophomore Heather Stearns has seven and is third in the Big 12 with a 1.20 ERA.

Two freshmen, Ari Hawkins and Lindsey Cargill, have been in the starting lineup since day one and have contributed to the early success for Baylor. Hawkins, at second base, is second on the team with a .375 batting average while Cargill, at centerfield, is third on the team in RBI with 11.

“Our freshmen have stepped it up, and came in here ready to play or pushed someone in front of them, I’ve been very pleased with that," said Baylor head coach Glenn Moore. "In the same regard I’ve had upper classmen that have brought them along in the offseason and really given them the rite of passage to have the type of confidence.”

The Bulldogs are under second-year head coach Mark Montgomery and have played some tough opponents to start the year including No. 8 Kentucky twice,, No. 19 Oklahoma and Arkansas who has been in and out of the Top 25. Louisiana Tech is 0-4 vs. the Top 25 this season and 8-7 vs. the rest of the competition. Louisiana Tech hits .262 as a team and has a team ERA of 3.48.
