IRVING, Texas -
For the seventh time in her career, Whitney Canion has been named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
Her first award of the season, the Aledo, Texas, native, last earned the honor on Feb. 14, 2012. She is tied for the Big 12 lead in wins (11), while holding a 0.97 ERA and striking out 110 batters in 79.0 innings.
Canion tossed her fourth career no-hitter and first in a 7.0 inning game in a 4-0 win over Purdue last Sunday to lead Baylor to a series sweep of Purdue over the weekend. Additionally, the junior lefty became just the sixth pitcher in Big 12 history to record 1,000 strikeouts in their career. Canion made three appearances and went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a save. She struck out 18 batters in 14 innings, including two complete-game shutouts and allowing opponents to hit just .077 against her.
Canion and the No. 15 Lady Bears will next be in action on Wednesday, taking on No. 4 Cal at 7 p.m. CT. The can can be heard on 1660 ESPN Central Texas or by tuning in to baylorbears.com.
