SCOUTING THE FIELD
Cal enters the weekend, winners of its last 19 games and ranked as high as No. 4 in the country. The Bears are hitting .297 as a team, but have 27 home runs on the year. The offense is paced by Lindsey Ziegenhirt's .415 average, as she adds 10 home runs and 32 RBI. All-American Jolene Henderson is the ace of the staff with a 16-2 mark, 0-98 ERA and 126 strikeouts in 121.1 innings.
Utah enteres on a 12-game unbeaten streak, going 11-0-1 during the span. The Utes are hitting .293, led by Kelsi Hoopiiaini's .413 average to go with four homers and 17 RBI. The pitching staff has a 3.17 ERA and 60 strikeouts combined in 132.1 innings.
Syracuse is 5-10 and hitting .191 overall. The Orange have been pitching well, holding a 2.87 ERA with 70 strikeouts in 95.0 innings.
Hawaii (17-5) sits as high as No. 20 nationally, and have won six-straight. The Rainbow Wahine are 14-2 at home and hitting .267 with 28 home runs. In the circle Kaia Parnaby is 15-2 with a 1.23 ERA and 152 strikeouts un 119.2 innings.
BAYLOR IN HAWAII
This marks the third time Baylor has made the trek to Hawaii. The Lady Bears are 5-7 all-time, going 2-4 in 2007 and 3-3 in 2003.
CANION NAMED PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Junior Whitney Canion was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for the seventh time on Tuesday.
Canion tossed her fourth career no-hitter and first in a 7.0 inning game in a 4-0 win over Purdue last Sunday to lead Baylor to a series sweep. Canion made three appearances and went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a save. She struck out 18 batters in 14 innings, including two complete-game shutouts and allowing opponents to hit just .077 against her.
On Sunday, March 10, Canion became just the sixth pitcher in Big 12 history to record 1,000 strikeouts in their career. Currently sitting at 1,008 for her career, she already holds the Baylor career record.
STATS NEAR NATION'S BEST
Baylor currently ranks No. 2 nationally in team ERA, behind Oklahoma, with a 1.04 ERA. Heather Stearns ranks third (0.78) and Canion 11th (0.97). Offensively, Sarah Smith is third in the nation with her .508 batting average.
The Lady Bears' underclassmen have been a vital part of the team's offensive success in 2013. Of the squad's 114 RBI on the year, 81 (70 percent) have come from underclassmen, with 45 coming from freshmen. Underclassmen have also accounted for 12 of the team's 15 home runs, with freshmen totaling 10.
HOME RUNS RETURN
Baylor's 15 home runs after 25 games has surpassed the 14 hit in all 56 games of the 2012 season.
EXPERIENCE IN THE CIRCLE
The Lady Bears pitching staff has three players with considerable pitching experience. Combined, Whitney Canion (78), Courtney Repka (49) and Liz Paul (20) have combined for 146 wins during their careers.
Combined with Heather Stearns (6-1, 0.78 ERA), the staff has a 1.04 ERA with a .155 opponent batting average to go along with 197 strikeouts in 167.2 innings of work.
A pair of Baylor players are sneaking up on Baylor career marks. Kathy Shelton sits in second on the all-time stolen base list with 94, eight shy of Harmony Schwethelm's 102.
Whitney Canion is second on the all-time wins list at BU with 79, three shy of Lisa Ferguson's record of 82.
The Lady Bears have taken tournament titles in each of its first four, winning the first two at home and the last two on the road.
MOORE APPROACHING 500
Head coach Glenn Moore sits just three wins shy of 500 for his Baylor career. With a Baylor career mark of 497-247 (.668), Moore is the winningest coach in program history.
