IRVING, Texas -
For the fifth time in her career, sophomore Whitney Canion was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. With that fifth award, she has won more conference weekly awards than any player in Baylor history.
Canion, who last won the award on April 7, 2009, went 3-1 with a 0.67 ERA, including leading Baylor to a series win at No. 4 Arizona. The sophomore allowed just two earned runs and struck out 21 batters in 21 innings of work last week, throwing a complete-game shutout with nine strikeouts against the Wildcats on Friday that resulted in a 6-0 win. Canion picked up the series clincher on Sunday, allowing just four hits in a 3-2 win. The series win at Arizona was the first by a non-conference opponent since before the 1999 season. The lefty also began the week with a win at San Diego State, allowing just two hits and zero runs in four innings.
With her six strikeouts on Sunday, Canion moved to second place on Baylor's all-time career strikeout list with 613.
Canion and the Lady Bears will face North Texas in a doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday in Denton.
