Arlington, Texas - The Baylor softball squad split a doubleheader with UT-Arlington at the Mavericks' Allan Saxe Field on Tuesday night. Baylor took the first game 2-0 while the Mavericks won the second 11-3.
Baylor pitcher Joni Miller (sophomore, Edmond, Okla.) allowed only two hits while earning her 17th victory and fifth shutout of the season. UTA's Katy Cox was equally effective limiting the Lady Bears to five hits while striking out 11. Miller is now 17-4 while Cox falls to 10-6.
Game one was a pitcher's duel until the sixth inning when Baylor's Naomi Fitzgerald (senior, College Grove, Tenn.) led off with a single then stole second. Two batters later Ryan Stukel (junior, Cochise, Ariz.) hit a towering shot over the left field fence for her eighth home run of the season. Miller put the Mavericks down in order in the seventh to secure the victory for the Lady Bears.
Things looked promising in the second game when Baylor batters racked up three doubles and scored a run in the top of the first inning but UTA countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Mavericks would add one in the second, six in the third and two more in the sixth to take game two. UTA's hitters tagged Sarah Caudle (sophomore, Gilroy, Calif.) for 11 hits and 10 earned runs while three Maverick pitchers (Kelly Rhodes, Amanda Kirk, Katy Cox) combined to limit Baylor to eight hits. Seven of Baylor's hits came off the starter Rhodes. Kirk earned the victory to raise her record to 3-1 and Caudle's record now stands at 7-4.
Baylor, ranked #19, currently stands at 26-9 on the season while UTA is 14-8-1. The Lady Bears will host UT-San Antonio on Wednesday, March 21 at Baylor's Getterman Stadium. The doubleheader will begin at 5:00 p.m.
