Texas is hitting .340 as a team with 38 doubles and 30 home runs and led by Taylor Hoagland's .481 mark, eight doubles, nine home runs and 28 RBI. Taylor Thom has added nine doubles, nine home runs and 38 RBI to go with a .392 batting clip. In all, UT has seven batters hitting over .300. The pitching staff (1.68 ERA) is guided by Blaire Luna, 13-1, 1.31 ERA, 91 IP, 174 K's.
VS. RANKED OPPONENTS
Baylor is 2-2 against ranked opponents this season, with both wins coming on the road (at Arizona State, at Hawaii). Junior lefty Whitney Canion is 2-1 with a 1.62 ERA and 30 K's in 21.2 innings with opponents hitting just .182 against ranked foes this season.
A pair of Baylor are close to breaking all-time program career marks. Whitney Canion is second on the all-time wins list at BU with 81, one shy of Lisa Ferguson's record of 82.
Kathy Shelton sits in second on the all-time stolen base list with 101, one shy of Harmony Schwethelm's 102.
THE THUMANN SHOW
When coach Moore inserted Kaitlyn Tumann into the lineup on April 21, 2012 in Lubbock, little did he know what a gem he had found. Used mostly as a pinch runner, the Katy, Texas, native, went 4-4 with a home run and closed out the final 14 games hitting .488. Since being inserted to the lineup, she hasn't missed a game and over the last 45 games she is hitting .449 with six doubles, two triples, four home runs, 25 RBI and 28 steals.
SHELTON ON A TEAR
Senior outfielder Kathy Shelton extended her hitting streak to 10 and on-base streak to 14 on Wednesday. During the last 10 games, she is hitting .471 (16-for-34) with seven steals.
Junior catcher Clare Hosack's arm is truly an equalizer when it comes to eliminating baserunners. The North Palm Beach, Fla., native, as thrown out 42 percent (28-of-67) of runners that have attempted to steal while adding 10 pickoffs during her career. This season, runners have been weary, as she has thrown of 6-of-11.
The Lady Bears' underclassmen have been a vital part of the team's offensive success in 2013. Of the squad's 129 RBI on the year, 90 (70 percent) have come from underclassmen, with 62 coming from freshmen. Underclassmen have also accounted for 13 of the team's 17 home runs, with freshmen totaling 10.
HOME RUNS RETURN
Baylor's 17 home runs after 31 games has surpassed the 14 hit in all 56 games of the 2012 season.
STATS NEAR NATION'S BEST
Baylor currently ranks No. 2 nationally in team ERA (1.27) behind Oklahoma's 0.67. Heather Stearns is also sixth nationally in walks allowed per 7/IP (0.73) with a strikeout/walk ratio of 11.7.
EXPERIENCE IN THE CIRCLE
The Lady Bears pitching staff has three players with considerable pitching experience. Combined, Whitney Canion (81), Courtney Repka (49) and Liz Paul (20) have combined for 150 wins during their careers.
Combined with Heather Stearns (8-2, 1.28 ERA), the staff has a 1.27 ERA with a .161 opponent batting average to go along with 250 strikeouts in 208.2 innings of work.
NO RUNS? NO WIN
The Lady Bears have dropped just five games this season, but are being outscored 21-1 in those losses. Until plating a run in its last loss at No. 20 Hawaii on March 16, BU had been shutout in all losses.
MOORE MAKES 500
Head coach Glenn Moore made history in the wee hours of the morning on March 16. Playing in Honolulu and with the game beginning at 1 a.m. central time, Baylor picked up a 5-3 win over the 20th ranked Rainbow Wahine to give Moore his 500th win of his Baylor career. Moore became just the third coach in all sports at Baylor to record 500 wins while at the school, joining current baseball coach Steve Smith and former baseball head coach Mickey Sullivan.
On Sunday, March 10, Canion became just the sixth pitcher in Big 12 history to record 1,000 strikeouts in their career. Currently sitting at 1,013 for her career, she already holds the Baylor career record.
