The No. 17 Baylor softball team (31-7) will step outside conference play, traveling for a doubleheader at Houston (28-12) beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the Cougar Softball Field in Houston. The pair of games will be the sixth in-a-row on the road in the last seven days.
“Houston is a very good team,” head coach Glenn Moore said. “It’s a tough part of our schedule because of so much travel, but we have to just keep showing up and playing like we have been.”
This will mark the second time the two schools have met this season, with Houston taking the first meeting, 1-0 in Waco on Feb. 27. Baylor leads the all-time series, 12-7, including the last two in Houston.
The Lady Bears are coming off a 3-1 week that saw them sweep a road doubleheader at No. 24 Texas Tech and split a road series at No. 14 Oklahoma. Senior shortstop Dani Leal leads the squad with a .394 average, 11 home runs, 27 RBI and an .819 slugging percentage. Baylor’s pitching staff is second in the Big 12 with a 1.28 ERA, led by Whitney Canion’s 0.97 ERA. Sophomore Liz Paul is fifth (1.28) while Courtney Repka is 11th (2.02).
Baylor is off to its second best record of all time through 38 games, only trailing the 2005 team’s 33-5 mark.
Houston enters the double-dip on a 10-game win streak after three, run-rule victories at UTEP this past weekend. Melissa Gregson leads the way offensively with 12 home runs and 34 RBI to go with a .333 average. The Cougars have been stellar in the circle as well, combining for a 1.27 team ERA, as Amanda Crabtree (15-6, 1.01 ERA) and Donna Bourgeois (11-6, 1.59) split time.
