SCOUTING OKLAHOMA STATE
Oklahoma State is 24-17 overall this season and 2-4 in Big 12 Conference action after being swept by Iowa State last weekend in Ames. Despite scoring 21 runs in the three games and batting .379 as a team, OSU faltered stranding 36 runners on base in the three-game set. The Cowgirls have won 17 of their last 22 games dating back to March 8. In those 17 victories, the pitchingstaff has given up just 12 runs total.
HOLL OF A DAY
Junior Holly Holl had a career night on Tuesday in a 7-3, 10-inning win at Texas State. Holl had a season high three hits along with tying a career high with four RBI, homering and adding a double.
VS. RANKED OPPONENTS
Baylor is 2-7 against ranked opponents this season, with both wins coming on the road (at Arizona State, at Hawaii).
The Lady Bears’ underclassmen have been a vital part of the team’s offensive success in 2013. Of the 161 RBI on the year, 109 (68%) have come from underclassmen. Underclassmen have also accounted for 16 of the team’s 22 home runs, with freshmen totaling 11.
STATS NEAR NATION’S BEST
Entering the week, Baylor ranked No. 14 nationally in team ERA and third in the Big 12.
Individually, Whitney Canion is 13th in strikeouts/7IP (9.8), while Heather Stearns ranks 15th in strikeouts per 7 innings (9.5).
On the offensive side, Baylor is 27th in the nation with 1.74 steals/game while Kathy Shelton is 14th (0.67 steals/game) and Kaitlyn Thumann is 30th (0.59 steals/game).
A pair of Lady Bears broke all-time program career marks on March 29. It began with Kathy Shelton breaking Harmony Schwethelm’s (2003-06) all-time steals mark of 102 in game one of a doubleheader against Iowa State. The senior outfielder now has 109. Whitney Canion broke the all-time wins record of 82, previosuly held by Lisa Ferguson (2004-07) and now has 84 for her career.
THE THUMANN SHOW
When coach Moore inserted Kaitlyn Tumann into the lineup on April 21, 2012 in Lubbock, little did he know what a gem he had found. Used mostly as a pinch runner, the Katy, Texas, native, went 4-4 with a home run and closed out the final 14 games hitting .488. Since being inserted to the lineup, she hasn’t missed a game and over the last 54 games she is hitting .422 (73-for-173) with 10 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 31 RBI and 32 steals.
SHELTON ON A TEAR
Senior outfielder Kathy Shelton has reached base in 21 of her last 22 games entering the weekend. She has a hit in 34 of 40 games this year and has been on base in 37 of those contests.
HOME RUNS RETURN
Baylor’s 22 home runs after 40 games has surpassed the 14 hit in all 56 games of the 2012 season.
EXPERIENCE IN THE CIRCLE
The Lady Bears pitching staff has three players with considerable pitching experience. Combined, Whitney Canion (84), Courtney Repka (49) and Liz Paul (20) have combined for 153 wins during their careers.
Combined with Heather Stearns (9-4, 1.65 ERA), the staff has a 1.75 ERA with a .183 opponent batting average to go along with 333 strikeouts in 272.2 innings of work.
