SCOUTING TEXAS
Texas enters the final contest of the regular season sitting in second place in the Big 12 standings after dropping two-of-three at Oklahoma State last weekend. The Longhorns are 23-3 at home this season and are third in the Big 12 with a .330 batting average. Taylor Hoagland leads the way with a .429 clip to go with 11 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs and 40 RBI. UT is second in the conference with a 1.65 ERA, as Blaire Luna holds a 25-5 mark with a 1.25 ERA, leading the Big 12 with 336 strikeouts.

SERIES
Texas leads the series 23-12 after taking the first two games of the 2013 season. The Lonhorns scored four runs in the top of the ninth for a 4-0 win in Waco on March 23, as Whitney Canion struck out 14 in the first eight innings of work. The following day in Austin, UT came from behind with five runs in its final two at bats for a 5-1 win. This marks the third-consecutive season these two teams have met in Austin on the final day of the regular season. Baylor’s last win at Texas occurred on May 15, 2011 with a 2-1 victory.

VS. RANKED OPPONENTS
Baylor is 2-7 against ranked opponents this season, with both wins coming on the road (at Arizona State, at Hawaii).

SHELTON STEALS ANOTHER RECORD
Senior Kathy Shelton, the program’s all-time steals leader (117), broke the single-season record for steals on May 11 (Senior Day). Following a steal of second that tied the mark, Shelton swiped third for the new record of 37. Her career mark of 117 currently sits in third all-time in Big 12 history.

CANION MOVING UP BIG 12 CHART
Redshirt junior Whitney Canion already holds the all-time Baylor record for strikeouts, becoming the first player in history to reach 1,000 for her career. Canion now sits sixth on the Big 12 list (1,141) and is 10 shy of Lauren Bay (Oklahoma State, 2000-03) for fifth.

UNDERCLASSMEN OVERPERFORMING
The Lady Bears’ underclassmen have been a vital part of the team’s offensive success in 2013. Of the 209 RBI on the year, 142 (68%) have come from underclassmen. Underclassmen have also accounted for 19 of the team’s 27 home runs (70%), with freshmen totaling 13.

THE THUMANN SHOW
When coach Moore inserted Kaitlyn Tumann into the lineup on April 21, 2012 in Lubbock, little did he know what a gem he had found. Used mostly as a pinch runner, the Katy, Texas, native, went 4-4 with a home run and closed out the final 14 games hitting .488. Since being inserted to the lineup, she hasn’t missed a game and over the last 64 games she is hitting .407 (87-for-214) with 14 doubles, three triples, five home runs, 41 RBI and 40 steals.

SMITH HITS AND GETS HIT
Freshman Sarah Smith is third on the team with 53 hits, but she has been hit 12 times this season, tying the Baylor single-season mark with Jordan Vannatta (2010).

HOME RUNS HARD TO GET AT GETTERMAN
How hard is it to hit home runs out of Getterman Stadium? In Baylor’s 27 home games, just 10 have been homers with the Lady Bears totaling five and their opponents hitting five.

STATS NEAR NATION’S BEST
Entering the week Baylor ranked No. 21 nationally in team ERA (1.95) and third in the Big 12.
Individually, Whitney Canion is 15th nationally in K/7IP (9.3), while Heather Stearns ranks 16th (9.2). Canion is also 17th in the country, giving up just 4.42 hits/7IP and 20th in strikeouts (243).
On the offensive side, BU is 20th in the nation with 1.79 steals/game while Kathy Shelton is 15th (0.68 steals/game).

SHELTON NEAR TOP
In addition to stealing bases, Shelton its near the top of two other significant categories. The senior is third on the all-time runs list (145), 19 shy of Kelly Osburn’s mark of 164 and five from reaching Brette Reagan (150). Additionally she is fifth on the Baylor all-time hits list (226).

LATE LEADS ARE SAFE
If Baylor leads a game heading to the sixth inning, it has been as good as over. The Lady Bears are 30-0 when leading after five innings and 32-0 when heading to the seventh with a lead.

DOMINANT IN THE CIRCLE
The Lady Bears pitching staff has three players with considerable pitching experience. Combined, Whitney Canion (91), Courtney Repka (50) and Liz Paul (20) have combined for 161 wins during their careers.
Combined with Heather Stearns (10-4, 2.02 ERA), the staff has a 1.95 ERA with a .197 opponent batting average to go along with 435 strikeouts in 361.2 innings of work. The four pitchers have combined for 18 double-digit strikeout games this season.
