The Longhorns enter Sunday’s tilt after a 2-1 series loss at Oklahoma last weekend. The Longhorns are sixth in the country with a .335 batting average, led by Lexy Bennett’s .395 average and 52 RBI. In the circle, Blaire Luna (17-4, 2.48) and Rachel Fox (13-1, 2.24 ERA) split time on a staff with a 2.46 ERA.
NCAA SELECTION SHOW
The NCAA Championship Selection show will air on Sunday at 9 pm CT on ESPNU. Fans are invited to come watch with the team in the Stone Room at the Ferrell Center as the Lady Bears look to make their seventh appearance in the tournament and third in the last four years.
FRESHMEN STEPPING UP IN CONFERNCE PLAY
Baylor has relied heavily on its freshmen to knock in runs during Big 12 play. Kaitlynn Thumann (9), Jordan Strickland (7) and Sarah Crockett (7) have accounted for 23 of the team’s 53 RBI in conference. The trio has registered 44 percent of the RBI’s despite making just 20 percent of the team’s at bats.
HITTING HOT LAST 10 GAMES
Baylor’s offense has been heating up over the last six games, as the Lady Bears have hit .307 since switching to its current lineup for Kathy Shelton at second and Thumann in right. Four BU players are hitting over .300 (Thumann - .567, Holly Holl - .438, Jordan Strickland - .357 and Clare Hosack - .333).
THUMANN SPARKS OFFENSE
Thumann entered the starting lineup as a regular in right field on Saturday, April 21 at Texas Tech and has sparked the offense ever since. Since that time, the freshman is hitting .567 with one homer, eight runs nine RBI, a .700 slugging percentage, .515 on-base percentage and six stolen bases.
START FAST, FINISH STRONG
Baylor is 27-4 in games it scores first, and 6-16 when the opponent does. When the Lady Bears hold a lead after six innings, they are a perfect 28-0.
The Lady Bears have two of the top five base stealers in program history on the 2012 squad. Senior Kayce Walker enters the weekend fourth all-time with 82, while Shelton is fifth with 78, stealing successfully 93 percent of the time.
As a team, BU is first in the Big 12 with 90 stolen bases.
Baylor is 5-12 against ranked foes this season. The Lady Bears knocked off then No. 18 Oregon (2-1) and No. 24 North Carolina (2-0) in the same day (3/2) before a 1-0 win over then No. 7 Oklahoma (3/25). The Lady Bears also added a 5-4 extra-inning win over No. 5 Texas (4/18) and an 8-4 victory at No. 24 Texas Tech (4/22).
HOMERS AWAY FROM HOME
Baylor plays in one of the toughest home run parks in the country, and this proves it. In Big 12 games since 2007 the Lady Bears have hit 46 of their 63 home runs (73 percent) away from Getterman Stadium.
PITCHING STAFF HOLDING ITS OWN
BU entered the week ranked 20th nationally and hold a 1.86 ERA, with Liz Paul leading the way with a 2.01 mark.
