Baylor, Florida State to Square Off in Elimination Game Saturday at WCWS

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - No. 13 seed Baylor and No. 8 seed Florida State each have its backs against the wall Saturday with the teams playing in the Women's College World Series' first elimination game at 11 a.m. on ESPN2.

Baylor is coming off an 11-0 loss to Florida in five innings Thursday while Florida State dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 1 seed Oregon Thursday.

The Lady Bears enter with a 47-15 overall record while Florida State comes in with a 55-8 record. The Seminoles are making their first WCWS appearance since 2004 while the Lady Bears last made it in 2011 to Oklahoma City.

Baylor and Florida State have met five times in the series history with the Lady Bears leading, 3-2. Baylor also has two postseason wins over the Seminoles, which came back in 2005 at the Auburn, Georgia Regional where Baylor won twice to advance to the Super Regional in Waco, before falling to California.

The Lady Bears won 9-5 over the Seminoles May 21, 2005, and 5-3 on May 22, 2005 in the teams' last two meetings.

Statistically, entering into Saturday, Florida State and Baylor have similar team stat lines. The Seminoles are hitting .305 compared to Baylor's .304 and Florida State's team ERA is 1.47 while Baylor's is 1.67.

FSU's Lacey Waldrop was named the USA Softball National Player of the Year headed into the WCWS and she has a 38-6 record with a 1.07 ERA. Offensively, the Seminoles' Maddie O'Brien leads in every major offensive category with a .429 batting average, 24 home runs and 83 RBI.

Baylor's offensive leaders are Kaitlyn Thumann with a .383 batting average while Linsey Hays leads Baylor with 13 homers and 48 RBI. Whitney Canion has posted a 31-11 record with a 1.44 ERA thus far in the 2014 season.
