WACO, Texas - Baylor's softball program will close its non-traditional fall season in association with celebrating the school's homecoming Saturday. The Bears will play host to Midland College at 10 a.m. on Baylor softball's Alumni Weekend, and the program will hold a "Meet the Team" event between the doubleheader with Midland CC.
The "Meet the Team" event was originally scheduled Sept. 28, but was postponed due to inclement weather. In between games Saturday, Baylor's team will introduce themselves to the crowd, and fans will get a chance to mingle with the players after the doubleheader.
The twinbill marks the last of Baylor's competitions in the fall before the regular season starts in February. In addition, several former Bears' softball players will be in attendance for Homecoming.
"The alumni have had trouble finding hotel rooms. That's another sign of great times we are experiencing in Baylor sports history," Baylor head coach Glenn Moore said. "In the past, tickets and hotel rooms were plentiful, but not anymore. I still expect a good turnout and coupled with our `Meet the Team' even we expect a great environment."
The Bears faced Northwestern State, SK College Look and McClennan CC this fall headed into the final fall competition with Midland CC. Moore said he is pleased with Baylor's progress in the fall.
"We have learned so much about this team and I am pleased with that information. We have grown a great deal, but I had questions going in about leadership, and who would fill the void of Kathy Shelton, one of the greatest leaders I've ever coached," he said. "But, I believe we have a whole class of seniors to lead this team in the spring as well as some great role players. There is still offseason to go, and the team must work hard. We've got a demanding and challenging schedule, but I'm confident in the offseason program here and that the challenge will be met."
Baylor was 42-17 last season and were third in the Big 12 standings with a 10-8 mark. The Bears open the 2014 season in Las Vegas, Nev. at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic hosted by UNLV, Feb. 7-9. Baylor will not play the hosts, but will open with games against Washington and San Diego, Feb. 7.
