HONOLULU- Baylor's sixth-ranked women's tennis team (2-0) followed up its season-opening win with a 5-2 victory over Hawai'i (1-1) on Saturday at the UH Tennis Center in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
The Lady Bears' victory marks the fifth consecutive year the team has started with back-to-back wins. Baylor used victories at the top two doubles spots and the top four singles spots for its second consecutive 5-2 win.
"We definitely played better as a whole today," head coach Joey Scrivano. "We still have a lot to work on, but we are looking forward to having two weeks of practice before our next match. It will be nice to have some consistent time on the courts to work on our game."
In the singles, the top four spots earned straight-set victories, with the most dominating win coming from sophomore Jordaan Sanford. The Maryland transfer lost just one game, taking a 6-0, 6-1 win over Martina Kostalova. Senior Sona Novakova followed shortly after with a 6-1, 6-2 over UH's Jamie Pawid to set up match-point.
Senior Diana Nakic then avenged her opening day loss with a good win at the No. 1 spot over Hawaii's Katarina Poljakova, 6-3, 6-0. Baylor's third senior, Nina Secerbegovic, clinched her second win of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Barbara Pinterova.
Baylor's doubles combinations claimed the opening point of the match for the second day in a row in exactly the same fashion. The Lady Bears took victories at the top two spots in the doubles rotation. At No. 1, Secerbegovic and Sanford went down to the wire with the UH duo of Pawid and Poljakova, but pulled out a 9-7 win. BU seniors Sona Novakova and Diana Nakic took care of business at the No. 2 spot with an 8-1 win over the Rainbow Wahine's Pinterova and Kostalova.
Baylor will send selected players to the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in La Quinta, Calif., from Jan. 12-15, before returning to the court in a dual-match against Prairie View A&M on Jan. 20 at 3:30 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
