WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's tennis team closed out the HEB Invitational by claiming both the singles and doubles titles on Sunday at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
"Today we played some of our best tennis under the most pressure," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "Overall, we're making positive strides, but at the end of the day we're a work in progress. We're nowhere near where I'd like to be right now."
On the final day of the event, Burgic and Kisialeva dispatched of Stephen F. Austin's Malena Gordo and Valeria Terentyeva, 8-0. That win completed an undefeated 3-0 run by the twosome with victories on all three days in the tournament's top draw.
"We came out and played some great doubles today," Scrivano said. "We're looking better and better every time we step on the court."
Horter had a perfect weekend in singles action capped by a 6-2, 1-6, 10-4 victory over Ashley Kitchen of Auburn.
Kisialeva had the longest singles match of the day for any Baylor player. She opened with a 6-0 win in the first set over Auburn's Plamena Kurteva, but fell in the second set 6-7(7). She rallied to take the third-set tiebreaker, 10-6.
The 16th-ranked Burgic secured an unbeaten 2-0 mark in singles at the event by handling Auburn's Emily Flickinger, 6-0, 3-6, 10-7, while Leatu wrapped up the event at 2-1 as she downed Jackie Kasler of Auburn, 6-4, 1-6, 10-5.
In her first singles match of the weekend, Jordaan Sanford claimed the only straight-set win of the day for a Baylor player. She got past Auburn's Maria Cardenas Conti, 6-2, 7-5.
"We came out very focused and won a lot of first sets," Scrivano said. "The Aurburn players are very well-coached. They're very disciplined and they fought back and made a run at us. We have to give them a lot of credit, but in the third set tie-breakers, those are not the easiest situations to deal with, and I feel like we did a great job in those breakers."
The Lady Bears will open the 2013 dual-match season by hosting Sam Houston State on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center. Follow @BaylorWTennis for updates on the team all season.
