WACO, Texas- Baylor's sixth-ranked women's tennis team kept its winning ways with a 6-1 victory over Houston on Saturday afternoon at the Hurd Tennis Center.
For a program that has been built on 20-win seasons, Baylor won its fourth consecutive match to open the season for just the second time in head coach Joey Scrivano's10 seasons. The Lady Bears dominated the top two doubles spots, then went on to win five of six singles matches for the second day in a row.
"I was proud of the way we came out and played doubles today," Scrivano said. "That really set the tone for the whole match. It was good to see how focused Sona (Novakova) came out and focused today, especially in doubles. I liked the (doubles) team of Megan and Nina, that's a good team for us to have on Court 1. In singles, Abby (Stainback) gave us a huge boost, going out there and beating a good player handily. It really provided us that lift and spark to finish the match."
In doubles, senior Nina Secerbegovic and freshman Megan Horter carried yesterday's success over into a dominating 8-1 victory against Houston's Bryony Hunter and Giorgia Pozzan. Shortly after, the senior duo of Diana Nakic and Sona Novakovamatched their teammates with another 8-1 victory on Court 2 over Charlotte Phillips and Maja Kazimieruk.
The singles matches all ended in two sets, with the Bears earning victories on the first five courts and Houston winning on Court 6.
After the Cougars tied the match 1-1 with their lone singles win, Baylor quickly countered with a 6-1, 6-1 win from Secerbegovic over Hunter Court 1 and a 6-3, 6-2 win from Novakova over Celia Fraser on C3. Horter then added the clinching point with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Phillips on Court 4.
Sophomore Abby Stainbackcollected another singles win for the Lady Bears on Court 5 in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over UH's Kazimieruk. Nakic added the final point on Court 2, battling through a 7-5, 7-5 match with Pozzan.
