WACO, Texas- Baylor's sixth-ranked women's tennis team moved its season-opening win streak to five matches with a 4-2 win over Tarleton State on Monday at the Hurd Tennis Center.

Baylor was able to take wins at the top four singles spots in a match that the teams agreed to start with singles play. The Lady Bears took straight set wins on Courts 1-4, while Tarleton State managed straight-set wins on Court 5 and 6. The teams split a pair of doubles matches, but with no match started at No. 3, the point was left undecided.

"We really like the way Abby (Stainback) is playing right now," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "Her focus level is great, and she went out there and just played really well. I liked the way we came out at No. 1 doubles. Even with the match clinched, they came out focused and didn't let up. We were really impressed with Brittany Ridenour out there today, too. Coming over from playing volleyball isn't easy, and she's out there competing and nearly took that second set. We have a lot of respect for her work ethic and athletic ability."

In singles, sophomore Abby Stainback was the most dominant, losing only two games in being the first to secure a point for Baylor. On Court 4, Stainback had little trouble with Tarleton State's Makenzie Mitchell in a 6-1, 6-1 win. The win moved Stainback's singles record to 3-0 on the season.

The points then came in a flurry for Baylor as Nina Secerbegovic finished off a 6-0, 6-4 win over Alicia Perez at No. 1, Megan Horter beat Melanie Barnes 6-2, 6-4 on No. 3 and Sona Novakova clinched it with a 6-4, 6-2 win on No. 2. Secerbegovic and Novakova each moved to 4-0 in dual-match singles play, while Horter's record improved to 3-1.

In doubles action, Baylor took a dominating victory on Court 1 with the team of Horter and Secerbegovic. Looking for their third straight win together, the pair won seven consecutive games to defeat Perez and Mitchell 8-1.

Baylor will be back on the court on Wednesday, Jan. 25 for a match scheduled with Stephen F. Austin at 3:30 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center.
