- On a cold day at the Baylor Tennis Center, the 5th-ranked Lady Bears cruised to a 4-0 win over No. 66 Harvard in their season opener on Saturday as part of the 2010 ITA Kickoff Weekend.
"I was really proud of the way our team handled the conditions," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "Harvard is a good team. They are one of the up and coming young teams out there and for us to win pretty convincingly, I am really please with where we are at right now."
In singles action, Baylor finished three matches in straight sets to secure the victory. Junior Taylor Ormond dropped just two games to beat Harvard's Samantha Rosekrans by a score of 6-0, 6-2. No. 24 Nina Secerbegovic cruised through the first set 6-0 in her match against Kristen Norton, then held on for a 7-5 second set. At the No. 6 singles position newcomer Carla Lindlar took down Alexandra Lehman 6-2, 6-3.
"Nina is a big time player, and she is very capable of playing No. 1 for any team," Scrivano said. "This is a great transition for her to play higher in the lineup. I think she is only going to get better as the season goes on."
The 13th-ranked doubles tandem of Broosova and Borsanyi, playing the in the No. 1 position, took down Harvard's Holly Cao and Samantha Rosekrans 8-4. Filipiak and Ormond joined forces to defeat Samantha Gridley and Sophie Change also by a score of 8-4.
"I thought in the doubles we played very well and we won the big points and that is all we can ask for right now," Scrivano said. "We are not going to play our best tennis right now. We just got to do what we can right now."
The Lady Bears will face #65 Brown in tomorrow's championship match. Brown defeated #69 Nevada 4-2 in its first-round match. The match is slated for 1 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center.
