Ormond Clinches Lady Netters Win over No. 16 W&M
Feb. 23, 2008
Baylor's 8th-ranked women's tennis team garnered its fifth straight victory Saturday with a 4-3 win over No. 16 William & Mary (8-4) at the Baylor Tennis Center inside a bustling Turner Riverfront Athletic Complex. With additional distractions in the form of high school soccer, college baseball and high school basketball all taking place within hundreds of yards of Baylor's match, the Bears were focused and determined when they took the courts. The Bears swept all three doubles matches for an early 1-0 lead and built on their lead with wins from Karolina Filipiak and Lenka Broosova Filipiak collected her seventh consecutive victory with a win over the Tribe's Carmen Pop in No. 6 singles; the win improved Filipiak's record to 19-7 and gives her the second most victories on the team this season.
No. 18 Broosova finished just minutes after Filipiak, posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Katarina Zoricic to extend her own win streak to eight matches, one shy of her season high, and improved to 24-3 on the season, including a perfect 8-0 mark in dual action. Needing just one point to clinch the victory, Baylor dropped its No. 5 and No. 1 singles matches before No. 22 Taylor Ormond (16-8) battled from a set down to give Baylor the win. Ormond, who was on a four-match losing streak entering the day, dropped the first set 3-6 to William & Mary's Ragini Acharya, but quickly battled back to a 6-1 second-set victory. In the matches' deciding set, Ormond fell behind early, 3-1, before fighting back to earn the win, 7-6 (2), in the tie-breaker. Despite capturing a 6-0 win in set one, Jana Bielikova (16-7) dropped the final match of the day 6-0, 3-6, 4-6, as the Tribe picked up the game's last point in the losing effort. "William & Mary is a very competitive team," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "Our girls came out of the blocks extremely strong in doubles and Taylor was able to finish it off in singles with the pressure on." Baylor (7-1) will next be in action as they travel to California to take on Pepperdine (Feb. 25) and UCLA (Feb. 26), matches that were originally scheduled for late January but were forced to be rescheduled due to inclement weather on the west coast. Matches are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively. Singles competition 1. #8 Megan Moulton-Levy (WM) def. #24 Zuzana Zemenova (BU) 6-3, 6-3 2. #18 Lenka Broosova (BU) def.
