EVANSTON, Ill. - The 19th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team ended a two-match road swing with a 4-1 loss at No. 9 Northwestern on Sunday at the Combe Tennis Center.

"We're just a very inconsistent team right now," head coach Joey Scrivanosaid. "This weekend, some of our players showed up against Notre Dame and played some great, inspired tennis. Today, some other players showed up against Northwestern and played some excellent tennis. But the name of the game is getting four points on a single day, and it takes a real team effort. We just haven't been consistent with that. We're going to continue to work on it."

To open doubles play, Northwestern's tandem of Veronica Corning and Alicia Barnett blew past Kiah Generette and Alex Leatu, 8-1. The Wildcats secured the doubles point against Baylor with Kate Turvy and Belinda Niu's victory over Megan Horter and Alex Clay, 8-2. Ema Burgic and Victoria Kisialeva'smatchup against No. 15 Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton went unfinished.

Northwestern tallied another two points on the board to place Baylor in a 3-0 deficit. Barnett earned a straight-set win over Leatu 6-3, 6-3 on court 6, and Brittany Wowchuk followed suit with another straight-set, 6-3, 6-0, victory against Maria Biryukova. In her third match of the season, the loss was Biryukova's first in singles play.

On court 1, No. 13 Burgic tallied the lone point for the Lady Bears against No. 41 Kate Turvy, 6-1, 6-2. Burgic's singles tally improved to 8-3 this season in the top spot for BU.

To clinch the match for Northwestern, No. 83 Niu would go on to defeat No. 86 Horter 6-2, 6-1 in the third spot.

As a result, Kisialeva's match against Corning and Generette's contest with Mushrefova was not finished.

With this loss, Baylor has now lost seven out of eight matches and is 4-7 overall. The Lady Bears have now dropped to 1-7 against top-25 ranked opponents this season.

Northwestern (6-4) now leads the all-time series against Baylor, 4-3.

"There's a lot of season left, and I believe in this team and that we're capable of doing some great things this season," Scrivano said. "We just have to keep fighting and trying to get better."

Up next, Baylor will head over to College Station to take on former Big 12 foe and 10th-ranked Texas A&M (5-1) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
