March 3, 2010
LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Lenka Broosova and sophomore Nina Secerbegovic each stayed undefeated to carry Baylor's ninth-ranked women's tennis team to a 6-1 win over Texas Tech in the first match of Big 12 play on Wednesday in Lubbock, Texas. "Its always nice to get the Big 12 season started, and kick it off with a win," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "We are playing well at certain positions, but we need some work at some other positions. We definitely can play and compete at a much higher level than we are right now. So that's the good news and the bad news." No. 8 Broosova and No. 41 Secerbegovic, playing the first and second positions for the Lady Bears each collected straight-sets victories. Broosova, who began the season 6-0, added to her undefeated streak with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of TTU's Sandra Dynka. Secerbegovic, who was 8-0 this season, added her ninth win with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Elizabeth Ullathorne. "(Lenka and Nina) are great competitors," Scrivano said. "If you are undefeated at this stage, you are not only a good tennis player, but a great competitor. They just believe in their abilities. I am really happy the way they have carried the team so far." The Lady Bears also got straight-sets wins at the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions as well. Csilla Borsanyi, ranked No. 53 in singles, recorded her second-consecutive win with a 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Kelsy Garland. Karolina Filipiak beat Caroline Starck 6-3, 6-4, while Carla Lindlar beat Lorena Aviles 6-3, 6-1. Baylor also won the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. The No. 11 duo of Broosova and Borsanyi cruised to an 8-1 win, while Taylor Ormond and Filipiak won 8-2. The Lady Bears will continue their Big 12 schedule with their conference home opener on Saturday at noon against Iowa State at the Baylor Tennis Center.
