WACO, Texas - The fourth-ranked Baylor women's tennis team swept all three doubles and won at the top three singles spots to defeat Kansas, 5-2, on Friday evening at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Baylor improves its record to 14-4 overall, 5-0 in Big 12 Conference play. The Lady Bears drop their first points of the season to Big 12 opponents. Baylor's won its previous four conference matches by 7-0 scores.
"Credit to KU for fighting hard and pushing us today," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "This was a wake up call, we need to get our minds right and continue to improve in this final stage of the regular season."
Baylor opened the match with an 8-3 win for No. 16 Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi over Edina Horvath and Ekaterina Morozova at No. 1 doubles. Nina Secerbegovic and Kasia Siwosz defeated Maria Martinez and Erin Wilbert, 8-6, on court two before Jelena Stanivuk and Karolina Filipiak downed Yuliana Svistun and Kunigunda Down, 8-7 (1), on court three.
In singles action, No. 74 Borsanyi defeated Morozova, 6-0, 6-0, on court two, while No. 37 Stanivuk downed Horvath, 6-1, 6-2, on court one.
"I love the way Csilla is playing at the moment," said Scrivano. "She is without question our most improved player over the past month. We need more players to step up and make that kind of improvement if we plan on making a serious run in May."
After dropping her first set, 6-1, Secerbegovic rallied to defeat Svistun, 1-6, 6-0, 6-0, on court three. Kansas got on the board on court six as Wilbert defeated Zuzana Chmelarova, 7-6, 6-2. Karolina Filipiak downed Martinez in a third-set super tiebreaker, 6-1, 6-7, 1-0, on court five, while Siwosz fell in a third-set super tiebreaker to Dorn, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0, on court four.
Baylor returns to action on Sunday as the Lady Bears play host to Kansas State at noon at the Baylor Tennis Center.
