WACO, Texas -
In the first match of a doubleheader, Baylor's 42nd-ranked women's tennis team opened with a 4-0 victory against Prairie View A&M on Friday at the Hurd Tennis Center.
"It's good to get back in the win column, that's the biggest thing," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "It was great to see Alex Clay get in the singles lineup, and she played well today. Overall, we know what we have to do, and today was a good step forward. Obviously, we have to get ready for Kansas. That's our priority right now. We don't really have time to enjoy this win."
The win snapped a three-match losing streak for Baylor and raised its season record to 8-13. PVAMU falls to 6-10 with the loss. Now the Lady Bears will continue Big 12 play vs. Kansas in the second half of the doubleheader at 5 p.m.
To kick off the afternoon, Baylor earned the doubles point for the seventh time this year. Thirty-one minutes into the match, Alex Clay and Jordaan Sanford notched a decisive 8-0 victory against Prairie View A&M's Danielle Moore and Erika Bond. The Lady Bears struck again soon with a win on court 3 as Alex Leatu and Abby Stainback secured an 8-1 victory vs. Lerato Ndlovu and Jade Daniels. BU's 29th-ranked doubles team of Ema Burgic and Victoria Kisialeva did not finish their match against Brittany Harrell and Christine Ngo Gwodog.
Up 1-0, the Lady Bears would continue their winning ways. Sanford and Burgic notched victories within two minutes of each other. Sanford won, 6-0, 6-0 against Prairie View A&M's Ndlovu. Burgic finished with a 6-1, 6-0 mark on court 1 versus Harrell, to earn her seventh straight win. To clinch the match for BU, Kisialeva downed Gwodog, 6-0, 6-0. Moments later, Clay got past Daniels at the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-0.
