WACO, Texas - Baylor's 12th-ranked women's tennis team got back to its winning ways on Senior Night with a 5-0 shutout over SMU on Tuesday evening at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Baylor got a great start from its three seniors, who were honored before match, on the way to the second shutout of the season. In an agreed upon schedule of only five singles matches and no doubles, Baylor won all 10 sets to dominate the match.
"It was a good win, and after the Texas loss, we are just trying to get back on track," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "Any time it's Senior Day, it makes everybody reflect on what the seniors have accomplished, and inspires the team to try to get a win for them."
Baylor's senior trio of Nina Secerbegovic, Diana Nakic and Sona Novakova provided the finishing points in the match, but it was freshman Nicole Kosakowski that got Baylor on the scoreboard first. In her second straight singles win, Kosakowski dominated from start to finish with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over SMU's Erika Marschall.
Sophomore Jordaan Sanford added the next point with a 6-0, 6-1 win to give Baylor a 2-0 lead and set the table for the seniors.
Novakova, ranked 45th, finished first with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kris Roberts on Court 3, followed by a match-clinching fourth point from No. 24 Secerbegovic on Court 1. Secerbegovic took down SMU's Edyta Cieplucha 6-4, 6-1 in the match.
Nakic then added the final point of the day, keeping Baylor perfect in the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Elena Fayner on Court 2.
Baylor will be back in action on Sunday and Monday with final two matches of the regular season. Both Big 12 matches, BU will face Missouri on Sunday at 1 p.m., and then take on Iowa State at 5 p.m. on Monday at the Hurd Tennis Center.
