NORMAN, Okla. - The 19th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team swept Kansas, 4-0, during the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championships on Friday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

"I felt like my team played really focused today, and they were well-prepared," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "It showed on the court."

Baylor improves to 16-13 on the season, and has won nine straight matches. Five of the victories have been against top-50 opponents. With the loss, Kansas falls to 11-10 on the season. The Lady Bears have advanced to the semifinal round at the event for 10 straight seasons.

The match kicked off with singles play instead of doubles, because of the threat of inclement weather.

BU struck first as Jordaan Sanford took down Maria Jose Cardona with a 6-0, 6-1 decision on court 2. Sanford is now 8-2 in her last 10 matches.

"Really, a big reason for our success during the later part of this season was because of Jordaan's exceptional play," Scrivano said. "She's razor-sharp with her focus, and it's good to see because you expect that out of your upperclassmen. When she wasn't in our lineup for a while due to her injury, it was tough on us. It's good to have her back in and healthy."

Soon after, Alex Leatu took her match, 6-1, 6-0 on court 5 against Anastasia Trubica. Leatu improved to 5-2 on court 5 with the win.

Increasing the Lady Bears' lead to 3-0, Alex Clay upped her dual-match record to 4-1 with her 6-1, 6-4 decision on court 6 over Victoria Khanevskaya.

"We've been dying to have Alex Clay in the lineup," Scrivano said. "Any time she's in there, she's shown that she's a great competitor, and obviously a great tennis player. We feel really confident when she's in there."

Clinching the match for Baylor, Kiah Generette got past Paulina Los, 6-2, 6-0. Generette's conference record improves to 9-1 with the victory.

Tenth-ranked Burgic's match against Maria Belen Ludueña and Maria Biryukova's contest versus Dylan Windom were not finished. Doubles matches were not contested as well, because the match had been decided.

Baylor leads the all-time series against Kansas 18-4 and has won the last 13 matches against the Jayhawks. BU is now 13-4 in its first match at the Big 12 Championships and 3-0 when that first-match is vs. KU.

Up next, the Lady Bears will face the winner of No. 4 TCU/ No. 5 Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Okla.

"The first step is we have to figure out who we're going to play," Scrivano said. "Once we know that, we'll start preparing and get the team emotionally, mentally, and physically ready to go. That's the key for us, is just taking care of our own things and worrying about the opponent second."
